More information

Hidden beneath the streets of Istanbul, the Basilica Cistern is one of the city’s most atmospheric historic sites. This vast underground chamber combines ancient engineering with a quiet, almost otherworldly setting.

Background and history

The Basilica Cistern was built in the 6th century during the reign of Emperor Justinian I to supply water to the Great Palace and surrounding buildings. Supported by hundreds of marble columns reused from earlier structures, the cistern reflects the scale and ingenuity of Byzantine engineering. Over time, it fell into disuse and was rediscovered centuries later beneath the city.

Why visit

Walking through the cistern feels like stepping into another world. Soft lighting, reflections on shallow water, and rows of towering columns create a striking atmosphere. Highlights include the famous Medusa head column bases, whose origins remain a subject of debate. The cistern offers a calm contrast to Istanbul’s busy streets above.
